The mucosal Esophageal_adenocarcinoma_-_high_mag-1-Customepithelium represents the initial barrier to microbial infiltration, and as such must exhibit potent innate immune defense against infection. Bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic pathogens initially interact with defense mechanisms at mucosal surfaces in the oral cavity, the respiratory tract, the gastrointestinal tract, the skin and the reproductive tract. The antimicrobial activities at these surfaces are varied, and include chemical defenses such as host defense peptides and proteins, commensal microbiota, and host cellular functions. Defects in these defenses can lead to infections and chronic inflammation such as inflammatory bowel diseases, whereas enhancement of these activities by such means as modulation of gene expression can potentially prevent infection.

This conference will address the latest research in these different innate immune defense mechanisms found at the mucosal surfaces in the body, with the goal of developing novel strategies to prevent and treat infectious as well as different inflammatory diseases. We believe that the protective barrier at different body surfaces will be the base for different innovative future treatment avenues which will be discussed at this meeting
