Medicinal Chemistry of Boron Compounds Conference
We are proud to add to our conference listing the inaugural Medicinal Chemistry of Boron Compounds Conference which shall be taking place 4th October – 7th October 2015 at the Parador de Oropesa in Spain.
The pharmacological uses of boron compounds have been known for several decades. However, recent progress in the bioorganic chemistry of boron is closely related to the discovery of boron-containing compounds as prospective drugs. While first developments of the medicinal chemistry of boron were stipulated by applications in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) of cancers, more recently it was found that some boron analogues of amino acids and their derivatives express hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, antiarthitic, antipleurisy, and analgesic properties. The knowledge accumulated during the past decades on the chemistry and biology of bioorganic boron compounds laid the foundation for the emergence of a new area of study and application of boron compounds as lipophilic pharmacophores and modulators of biologically active molecules; for example, carborane-containing compounds inhibit HIV replication, show anticancer activity, modulate purinergic receptors, etc. An additional advantage of boron clusters is that they are abiotic and therefore chemically stable in biological environment and usually resistant to catabolism.
These and other recent findings clearly show that there is still great unexplored potential in medicinal applications of boron-containing compounds. This conference will promote the development of new boron-containing drugs and materials for molecular medical diagnostics by bringing together renowned experts in the field of medicinal chemistry of boron compounds.
The Conference Chairs
Evamarie Hey-Hawkins has been a Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Leipzig University, Germany, since 1993. has published more than 370 publications in internationally renowned journals, four patents, and has given more than 225 oral presentations nationally and internationally. In 2013, she was honored as “IUPAC 2013 Distinguished Woman in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering” for her scientific achievements. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins is involved in numerous professional activities; she is a member of the Editorial Board of ZAAC, BBJNTCT, and the International Advisory Board of ChemPlusChem, referees for numerous journals and evaluates research proposals as member of the Review Board “Molecular Chemistry” of the DFG (since 2008). She heads several networks, for example as speaker of the Graduate School “Building with Molecules and Nano-objects” (BuildMoNa, since 2007), as Chair of the EU COST Actions “European Phosphorus Sciences Network” (PhoSciNet, 2008-13) and “Smart Inorganic Polymers” (SIPs, since 2013), or as coordinator of the “Materials Science and Catalysis Network” (MatCatNet) (funded by DAAD (SOE) since 2005).

Prof. Clara Viñas has dedicated work at industry (1984-1985), at public institutions being the head of Municipal Laboratory of Sabadell City (1985-1991) involved on chemical-bromatological analysis of food and environmental control, and at academia at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) from 1991. She is a Full Professor at the ICMAB-CSIC since 2006. She has published 22 book chapters with ISBN, an Encyclopedia chapter and over 270 original scientific papers in peer refereed journals included in the SCI (h= 41). She has been supervisor of 12 Master degrees (2 were distinguished by the Catalan Society of Chemistry with “Sant Jordi” Award) and 10 Doctoral Thesis (3 were distinguished by the U.A.B. with the Extraordinary Yearly Prize). She pioneered the EUROBORON conferences and co-chaired EUROBORON I, HALCHEM IV and IMEBORON XIII. She has led competitively funded research Spanish projects and participated in European, Catalonian and industry ones. She is co-author of 6 patents (1 European, 1 USA, 1 China and 3 British). She commonly acts as reviewer of SCI journals and Funding agencies. Her research interests are in the synthesis of novel boron compounds, carboranes and metallacarboranes, to be used for future medicinal applications among others.

The Parador Oropesa is majestic in every sense of the word. Located in the beautiful Castillian countryside to the west of Madrid; it is spacious, elegant, and imposing. Set in the former ancestral home of the Counts of Oropesa and located in the shadow of the Sierra de Gredos mountains, over the centuries, its Medieval cloisters and towers have accommodated aristocracy, bishops and soldiers.
There are two castles separated by an immense wall that is crowned by a magnificent machicolated parapet and an awesome tower. At one time the castle complex was controlled by Don Francisco de Toledo – Duke of Alba, and the Viceroy of Peru. He and later lords added an extended set of palatial rooms and quarters to create what remains today.
The bedrooms are large and spacious with simple Castilian styled, dark wood furniture, with all rooms offer inspiring views – either to the castle tower, the Gredos plains, or the Gredos peaks. There are fine views from any table in the restaurant, with those located against the glass wall on the north side offering particularly stunning panoramic views.
